| Überlieferungsgeschichtliche
This is why my German stinks. The vocab for studying theology is so completely over my head.
I'm actually unclear exactly what it means. uber=over/more, lieferungs=supply, geschichte=history, -liche=ly/like Thus 'over supply history-like'?

| Hebrew's getting rusty.
Eight lines took almost an hour. Granted, it's unfamiliar Hebrew, but...
Gotta move Hebrew further up in priorities, methinks.

| Right, so enchilada is now spelled enchilda.
Just fyi. | |

| I'm trying to learn Gaelic. It's slow going. Very slow going. *ahem*
But! Oh, the lovely, lovely etymology. It makes me go all squishy and pleased inside. I love what I do will do for a living.
Here's a few for your enjoyment:
Slogan: sluagh-ghairm "battle cry used by Scottish Highland clans," from sluagh "army, host, slew" + gairm "a cry."
and
Galore: gu leóir "sufficiently, enough."

| A few thoughts about Greek: My dad apparently talked to the religion department chair about me helping out with the Biblical Greek program. Now, I am quite happy to do this, but... 1. I'd already touched base with Dr. L and didn't want to seem to be pushing things. 2. I never know what my father will say. I love that he wants to help me. But, his versions of events and actual reality sometimes only have a nodding acquaintance with each other. And he will talk until you wish you brain would ooze out of your nose just so that you can excuse yourself. (Ask ybunny if you don't believe me. He got 45 minutes on Halliburton politiics without even asking for it. Poor guy.) So, I went over today after playing phone tag with Dr. C, the chairman. Basically he left it up to Dr. L...who likes me, but who also is unfailingly fair and won't give the job just because he likes me. And, there really /isn't/ a job as such. There is just the chance of possibly helping out in a random, you're-kindof-a-TA sort of thing. So, that's in limbo. And...blech. A few thoughts about distance: Those people who say that long distance relationships won't work can bite my natural white ass. You know who you are...you know how bitchy you are. I'm not saying I want to do this forever...I'm working on remedying it. But...it's do-able for now. The only times that I become unbearable to others is just before and just after we're together. The only times I'm unbearable to myself is when there is no chance of /any/ communication. Right now there is spotty communication. So, I'm only periodically unbearable to myself. ;) So, that's as it is. And...blech. I've got terms for my loan repayment. It will be quite workable. I'm pleased that my Gram is helping me out. Now, Mom...you know what? I can get you a livejournal if you want...then you can read all the entries and not just the public ones. ;) The username drjoan isn't taken yet. I love ya...and I don't mind you reading along. Well, I guess I should sleep since I've now been up waaaaayyyyy past my bedtime. | |

| There is something somehow just so right about stripping down, washing everything you have on, and then putting it back on right out of the dryer.
In other news, my iPod can't be 'mounted'. That's just so dirty. Methinks it will have to make a trip back to Apple-land to be fixed. Ah, well. I'm not roaming about right now anyway.

| I realized today how very little time there is left in this quarter. Here's the score, sports fans: Hebrew paper, looking good. Arabic studying...could use a little something. History studying...scared, oh so scared. Meh. I've started making a list for packing, because if I don't start now, I'll arrive at the airport without something important like, say, a passport, any underwear, or my lefthanded nose harp. And while making this list, I realized that the Hyde Park Bank ATM is still digesting my ATM card. Bastard. I've got to call them...or my bank...or something. Well, that's one thing already done... Today is Dr. Seuss' Birthday anniversary. One fish doesn't know the places I'll go with the catus petasatus who hears no who and I like the eggs but not the ham, Mr. Grinch. Just so you know...I'm about to geek out linguistically...so you've been warned... I keep meaning to write about The Passion of the Christ, but it's not something that I will undertake speaking about lightly, so I may never post anything about it...at least on a personal level. I will make some small remarks about the languages...as I've had people I didn't even know I knew popping out of the woodwork saying 'Umm...Jyll, you're, like, an ancient languages person and stuff. What's up with that gibberish?' That gibberish, ladies and gentlemonkeys, is Aramaic and Latin. No, there is no Greek in the whole movie. No, there is no Hebrew in the whole movie. Edit:I missed it...there was a short prayer in Hebrew. Lashings of apologies all around. I'm glad that my acknowledged best language is Greek. (or this would be more embarrassing. ;) ) Yes, I will ignore you if you argue with me about it. I refer you to the official website if you wonder if there were more than the two languages. I refer you to this post about why there Jesus may or may not have spoken Greek. The lovely cmpriest may not have a degree in linguistics, but she knows what she is talking about, quoth I. As, I said in my comment to it, I couldn't/wouldn't want to say it better, so I'll not waste space retracing her footsteps. There have been a few people, mostly film critics, who, funny thing, have no experience teaching or studying ancient languages (at least in any depth) saying that Gibson, et all are wrong for doing the movie in Aramaic and Latin vs. Hebrew and Greek. Well, the Aramaic can't be quibbled with too much. Aramaic was the spoken language at that time. Hebrew was still in use, but it was in use much in the same way classical Arabic is used today vs. colloquial. People can understand it, and don't hesitate to use it...but if you spoke it on the street or even when addressing most crowds, people would look at you a little funny. The Greek argument is a little more valid, perhaps...as Pilate would have been addressing his wife in Greek most likely (both being upperclass and well educated...Latin at that time being the judicial language or the rough and tumble language of the army). But, maybe she was lazy and skipped out on her paedagogus and had horrible Greek. (Gaius Marius, the great uncle of Iulius Caesar refused to speak Greek because he had a 'provincial accent'.) Maybe she wanted to fit in with her military husband. Who knows? That Jesus could speak Latin to Pilate? Sure. He lived to age 30 as a carpenter, only mere miles from one of the Decapoli, where Romans abounded. Surely he had trade there...as you can only sell so much furniture to little Nazareth. *sighs* That still doesn't explain why the acknowledged lingua franca was ignored, but then again, it was the lingua franca for the army. This Latin was not the same as the classical Latin, but a vernacular particular to the army itself. So, it would follow that Pilate and the soldiers would speak it. I must admit, I'm not a Roman soldier, it's not the early years AD (or CE, whichever), so I can't tell you if there are noticeable differences in what was spoken in the film from what I learned. I can tell you that I could understand all of the Latin, so glean from that what you will. I do have a few further ponderings in the back of my head about the why's of certain language nuances, but they are extremely esoteric and picky and nothing that makes a whit of difference as far as flow of the film or the theology is concerned. So, bravo to the linguists who worked on the set, I say, Bravo. That's it, I'm spent. | |

Parsing:
Phoboumai - present middle/passive (deponent) indicative I fear elthon - second aorist active participle intranslatable directly into English when I come thelo - present active indicative I want, I wish euro - second aorist active subjunctive I should find euretho - second aorist passive subjunctive I should be found thelete - present active indicative You wish, you want
For I fear, lest, when I come, such as I wish I should not find you and I should not be found by you such as you wish... Greek, Greek...you make me happy no matter what.

| Thought 1:I noticed small prints in the snow on the way to history. They can only be described as butt prints. I pondered and pondered on that. Were there babies out? Were they bare bum'd? Surely there had to be a great troop of them, since there are about 50 of these prints in the snow by the Chemistry building. Well, I just looked out the window and a squirrel made another. The squirrels here are huge and make what looks like butt prints when they jump around on the line layer of ice over the snow. Thought 2:This idea slightly helped along by marnanel's love of the word peninsula. So, if pen means basically 'almost' (therefore peninsula 'almost an island' and penultimate 'almost the last')...does Pendragon mean 'almost a dragon'? Hmmm... Thought 3:Is it possible to lose all ability to succeed just because you think you might not? That's it...I got nothing. | |

| I've started to realize...rather abruptly (as most of my realizations are) that I'm no longer 'talking to myself' in English.* I'm rather excited about it...makes me feel more of a real linguist.
I spent a lot of time with Hebrew running around my head today.

| I discovered this while looking for some quotes on education for chezzie... "Most people would rather give than get affection."-Aristotle *ponders* | |

| A couple of things, some good, some bad: 1. Good flight to ybunny who makes the run from London to Rio today. 2. I am quite Fu'ul at the moment. *winks* 3. I feel quite motivated to finally hang some of my pictures. I might scan some before I do that, but don't cross your fingers. 4. Only 3 more classes until the weekend. 5. Pay day is tomorrow...ah, the wonderfulness of cash in hand when downtown. (Don't sing it, narenek!) 1. I've discovered that if I miss even one dose of the stuff, my head about loses it. 2. Arabic dictation is of the devil. 3. Missing redthought with a fierce longing. I'm pretty sure everyone needs a sister to sent them Medjools in the mail. 4. Getting more irritated everyday with my building. While wonderful in some respects, I can really do without the mad shaggers and the new development of pot smoking on the weekends. 5. I spent a few minutes yesterday thinking 'oh crap' because I couldn't find my passport. I think I need to clean out my drawers. Okay. That's that. | |

| So nice to translate what you are good at for once...

I love that line... | |

| Sometimes...when you're only had 7 hours sleep out of 72, you randomly remember things.
Like when we were in Spain, and I discovered that the Spainards will not say an s+consonant combination...
So, Spiderman becomes Es-peederman, snacks becomes Es-naakes, and since they don't use ALTO signs, STOP becomes Es-top.
I found if funny. I may be insane. I'm going to bed soon, don't worry. ;)

| Alrighty. In Hebrew, there are three 'command' forms to verbs.
If they, he or she is being commanded, it is a jussive. If you all or you are being commanded, it is an imperative. If we or I am being commanded, it is a cohortative.
I know this. I have taught this to others. I have assimilated it and made it my own.
So, when I am asked on a quiz...give the jussive form of these six verbs, it should be a cinch.
So, why the hell did I put the imperatives...and why do I always realize these mistakes directly after it's too late to fix them?
Is it possible to be stupidly smart?

| Today is already wierd. Hmm. 1. Woke up at 5 am...FREEZING. I love the cold, but let's ease into it shall we? Spent the next 1/2 hour scrounging for things to pile on the bed. 2. Great shower...but as I was scrubbing the pen off my hands (I can't stop putting notes there...) I noticed that I have yet another freckle on my palm. How are they getting there? Not as though I'm running about holding my palms up... 3. No Hebrew this morning. So, I could have slept in. Instead I got back on the Talker and made more Noob mistakes. mavmavmavmavmavmav Ah, well. 4. I feel really icky. Like sick icky. I'm going to have to try to eat something...but so far, stuff isn't liking my stomach as a home. Ok...too much information? Nah. Y'all can handle it. And the most important part of the post... confutatis, darling! I must talk with you today! Please call my cell. | |

| Every so often, I go looking at the job openings for my field. (Yes, I've heard the jokes...you'd be sick of people suggesting you work at McDonald's too...)
Alrighty, my peeps. I found two good ones...one of them is even open. 1. Lecturer in Latin and Greek Philology, University of Edinburgh. 2. Lecturer and Research Assistant in Hebrew Language, City University of Dublin.
Mmmm...I could go for either of those. Though, perhaps I'd better just be happy with finishing my degree first. Hmph.
