Christening gifts
23rd-Aug-2006 01:42 pm
=swimming=
For those of you who were christened, what were you given as christening gifts from your godparents?

(If you know...I realize that you probably won't remember the getting of the gifts...a bit young for that. :) )

EDIT: I found the same bank I had when I was little! Awww...so cute! I don't know if I'll get it, but still...cool.

The only thing I remember offhand is a silver label thing saying PORT with a chain around it that you're supposed to hang around the neck of a bottle of port in case you don't want to read the label.

I would think you would hang it around a decanter when you've decanted port into it.

That seems an odd gift to give a baby/small child.

Oh, I think I also was given a pewter pint tankard with my name on it. I'd forgotten that.

Oh, wait, though.

The only christening present that I know of that I got (and still have) was from my dad's best friend. It is a silver cocktail shaker with my initials engraved on it. :-)

Obviously silver's the thing. I remember getting a silver duck money box. And maybe that's when I got a silver napkin ring too, now I think about it. Not certain if any were from my godparents.

Why is silver the thing?

Ooh...I had a silver duck money box. It had a pink hat and scarf. I still love it. (Which probably means that's what I should look for.)

Yes, you should hunt it out, though perhaps they weren't so similar, my was a pretty realistic duck, I can't see it lending itself to scarves and hats.

we don't really have godparents in the methodist church, or at least in MY church, but i remember a lot of silver cups n baby rings n baby bracelets.

Our methodist church has godparents, and the thing to give seemed to be either small silver cup/spoon sets (with the name engraved), or baby rings. Baby rings seem increasingly difficult to find now, however.

Is silver the direction I was supposed to go? I gave a kids-first-bible and have another idea up my sleeve that I have to wait a bit on (and don't want certain people to be able to read tat the moment).

I have no idea what direction to go. I didn't have official godparents (neither did my siblings) so I'm really open to any suggestions. :)

My godmother tried to smash a bottle of champagne across my bow, but they stopped her just in time.

God bless you and all who sail in you?

I was christened, but have no godparents.

I have a goddaughter, but she is not being christened (her mother is not Christian). They did a naming ceremony about two weeks after she was born, and for that, I offered my love, as I could not be present in person.

I gave my godson a silver-plated quaich with his name and the date engraved on it, which seems to be traditional, if not (at least for the time being) very useful.

Good idea. :)

Thanks.

I got a silver egg cup & spoon. That I now have no idea where it is, actually, which I guess means it's in my parents' house still.
