Hate to write? Me too.

I'm putting the finishing chapters on my sermon for tomorrow.

maygenoytoe sent me a link to some wonderful quotes about writing by many people, many of whom are pretty famous writers.

The hopelessly stuck [writer] would find it expensive but worth it to hire a gunman to pound on the door and threaten death as a spur to composition.

Enjoy.

I am not sure whether to be glad I never had the chance to preach a sermon because it would have been terrifying, or to wonder whether I would have thought of anything useful to say, or both. Of course I probably wouldn't because I have no theological training, but I sometimes try to imagine how the stress involved in producing sermons occasionally or weekly must affect life.

It's not bad.

It's easiest to preach a sermon on a set Biblical text from the liturgical calendar, since that limits what choices you have.

With our church, there is no limit, so there is free rein. I sort of wish there wasn't, since I can usually do well with a jumping off point, but get a bit scattered without one.

Luckily, my mum gave me the jumping off point for this one: the Magi.

I know what you mean: an infinite field makes it difficult to focus.

Luckily, my mum gave me the jumping off point for this one: the Magi.

Good luck with it!

A friend of mine is the senior (and only) pastor of a local church and happens to be a week short of her due date (i.e. she's REALLY pregnant). As a very pregnant mother of a 3 year old, she's understandably completely exhausted. Last night, she explained that she told God that he better either bring the baby before Sunday or give her inspiration on the sermon--because she just had nothing. Apparently she got some inspiration in the form of an article someone had shoved under her door, but... I guess that's why it's a calling.
