What are they replacing it with? Single yellow? Pay and display?

Pay and display. No free parking nights and weekends for me when we hire cars. Do they think I'm made of money?

There are still zig zags round the corner on Skene Street, near the recycling point on both sides of the street, they surely can't be removing those - they are actually at a school entrance...

yeah, but the signs are different round the corner, i noticed this the last time i was up, and couldn't get parked outside Jyll & Tom's. Means there's no loophole.

we don't have these road markings in my neck of the woods. what do the zig-zags signify?

Usually placed at the entrance of a school. Often accompanied with a sign clarifying the extent of the hours of operation (hence the weekend parking thing). No stopping (as opposed to no waiting).
